Madurai is a place where people ofen tend to visit. There are many places with national importance. It is also known as temple city. Madurai is situated on the banks of Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu, a southern Indian state. It is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu and has a population in excess of 1.1 million. It is well known for the Meenakshi temple situated at the heart of the town which attracts tourists as well as pilgrims.

MaduraiMadurai has a rich cultural heritage passed on from the great Tamil era more than 2500 years old, and has been an important commercial centre even as early as 550 AD. Madurai was the capital city of the Pandya kings of South India. Madurai has been a centre of learning and pilgrimage, for centuries. Legend has it, that the divine nectar falling from Lord Shiva's locks, gave the city its name - Madhurapuri, now known as Madurai. Being mentioned in all holy books, scriptures and folklore, this temple town is one of the most ancient human settlements of India.

Madurai is popular for its temples and so known as temple city. When we hear about madurai, Meenakshi Amman kovil comes to our mind. Words are not enough to glorify this temple.Visitors need 2 complete days to admire each and every side of the temple. It brings us a desire to make a complete study about this temple. This is a twin temple. The temple in the southern side is dedicated to Sri Meenakshi, the consort of lord Sundareswarar (Shiva) and the other to lord Sundareswarar. This is one of the biggest temple complexes of India.

Meenakshi Amman Temple
This is a twin temple. The temple in the southern side is dedicated to Sri Meenakshi the consort of lord Sundareswarar (Shiva) and the other to lord Sundareswarar. This is one of the biggest temple complexes of India. The temple is about 258 meters in length and about 241.4 meters in breadth. Of the five Gopuras (towers) that surround the 48.8 meters high southern tower is the tallest. Madurai Meenakshiamman kovil was built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the entire credit for making the temple as splendid as it is today goes to the Nayaks. The Nayaks ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th centuries and left a majestic imprint of their rule in the Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple.

Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal
Thirumalai Nayakar palace is one of the important palace which was built by Thirumalai Nayaakar in 1636. The paintings, carvings and designing of the mahal shows the amazing talents of the nayak kings. This Mahal is situated 2kms south east of Meenakshi Amman Temple. A classic example of the Indo-saracenic style, the piece de resistance of this mahal is its carved dome outsoars without the support of girders or rafters. This mahal has 248 pillars of each 58 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter. The gigantic pillars and paintings of the events that took place before, the ethics impress ourselves and takes us to the 16th century.

Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeshwara Temple:
An important place of worship for saivates located at a distance of 1.5 km from trichy and very nearer to srirangam. It is one amongst the jothirlinga states of lord shiva Lord shiva is seen in a form of linga and he is partially submerged in water.Underneath the linga form of shiva a spring comes and is a divine gift of the god. Archeological surveys prove that this was built in the same time when Renganatha swamy temple was built. A holy place which has five walls around and seven gopurams. only hindus are allowed in this temple.

Mariamman Tank
The Mariamman Theppakulam is a huge tank which is 1000 feet long and 950 feet wide. In the center of this tank there is a mandapam cum Lord vigneshwara temple. During festival season, this tank is filled with water and decorated with lights . This float festival is celebrated here on the Full moon day in the midst of january and febrary The tank turns colourful, which attracts the eyes of the visitors.

Gandhi Museum
Gandhi museum was the official residence of the District collectors of madurai for many years. This museum is a great historic tamukkam palace of Rani Mangammal during 1670. The importance of this museum is that in 1955, the palace and the land of 12 acres were dedicated to Gandhi samak Nidhi by the Government of TamilNadu in remembrance of the life and work of Father of our Nation.

Tirupparankundram
Tirupparankundram is located 5 miles southwest madurai.This is the place where lord Muruga and Devayanai, daughter of Indra married. This temple is a hill temple with a gorgeous look. Tirupparankunram is also mentioned in legend as 'the place where the sun and moon abide'. It is regarded as the sacred temple for marriages. People believe that marriages done here are succesfull due to the blessings of lord Muruga. The temple is surrounded with many trees and green lands.
