length and about 241.4 meters in breadth. Of the five Gopuras (towers) that
surround the 48.8 meters high southern tower is the tallest. Madurai
Meenakshiamman kovil was built by Kulasekara Pandya, but the entire credit
for making the temple as splendid as it is today goes to the Nayaks. The
Nayaks ruled Madurai from the 16th to the 18th centuries and left a majestic
imprint of their rule in the Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple.
Thirumalai
Nayakar Mahal Thirumalai Nayakar palace is one of the important
palace which was built by Thirumalai Nayaakar in 1636. The paintings,
carvings and designing of the mahal shows the amazing talents of the nayak
kings. This Mahal is situated 2kms south east of Meenakshi Amman Temple. A
classic example of the Indo-saracenic style, the piece de resistance of this
mahal is its carved dome outsoars without the support of girders or rafters.
This mahal has 248 pillars of each 58 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter. The
gigantic pillars and paintings of the events that took place before, the
ethics impress ourselves and takes us to the 16th century.
Thiruvanaikaval
Jambukeshwara Temple:An important place of worship for saivates
located at a distance of 1.5 km from trichy and very nearer to srirangam. It
is one amongst the jothirlinga states of lord shiva Lord shiva is seen in a
form of linga and he is partially submerged in water.Underneath the linga
form of shiva a spring comes and is a divine gift of the god. Archeological
surveys prove that this was built in the same time when Renganatha swamy
temple was built. A holy place which has five walls around and seven
gopurams. only hindus are allowed in this temple.
Mariamman
TankThe Mariamman Theppakulam is a huge tank which is 1000 feet
long and 950 feet wide. In the center of this tank there is a mandapam cum
Lord vigneshwara temple. During festival season, this tank is filled with
water and decorated with lights . This float festival is celebrated here on
the Full moon day in the midst of january and febrary The tank turns
colourful, which attracts the eyes of the visitors.
Gandhi
MuseumGandhi museum was the official residence of the District
collectors of madurai for many years. This museum is a great historic
tamukkam palace of Rani Mangammal during 1670. The importance of this museum
is that in 1955, the palace and the land of 12 acres were dedicated to
Gandhi samak Nidhi by the Government of TamilNadu in remembrance of the life
and work of Father of our Nation.
TirupparankundramTirupparankundram
is located 5 miles southwest madurai.This is the place where lord Muruga and
Devayanai, daughter of Indra married. This temple is a hill temple with a
gorgeous look. Tirupparankunram is also mentioned in legend as 'the place
where the sun and moon abide'. It is regarded as the sacred temple for
marriages. People believe that marriages done here are succesfull due to the
blessings of lord Muruga. The temple is surrounded with many trees and green
lands.
